I know many of you want to build and lead a great business. I get to hear many amazing visions describing the businesses you want to build, grow, or carry on. “A business that supports the family, one that is attractive to the next generation, builds healthy ecosystems, supports the community, allows healthy work-life balance”, and so on.  

A great business will need a great leader. Are you taking the actions to become the leader your business needs?  

You might wonder what results should a competent business leader produce? Here are some ideas:

  • Clear mission and vision 
  • Annual operating plan and budgets
  • Profit targets with economic plans
  • Clear roles and responsibilities for each person working in the business
  • Capital improvement plans
  • Cash flow plans and debt strategies
  • Personnel development plans and management succession plans
  • Risk planning with clear laid out strategies for responding

So how are you doing at becoming the leader your business needs?

Few of us would hit 100% of what is on this list. I know there are many times I fall short of being and becoming the leader my business needs. However, I do continually strive to become that ideal leader while intentionally building and providing room for growth of my co-workers to take on leadership roles.  

Some or all of the things on this list may not be in your wheelhouse and they might not sound like much fun. Get over it!  

Sure, it can be tough to learn how to do these things, and it might mean giving up time doing the outdoor stuff we enjoy. Being a leader is about developing the self-discipline to do the important things. Part of what makes these tasks sound difficult is no-one ever showed us how to do these things. If we had an example, or steps to follow, it would be easier to get going. Even better, if we had peers holding us accountable to producing these important results.
